DID YOU KNOW:
**BIG UPDATE!!**
It's here!! Fushigi Yuugi: The Eikoden, the third OAV series of this wonderful saga, is on sale now! Visit AnimeNation.com for information, plus info on the brand-new-for-2002 soundtrack!
You've probably been wondering what the heck "Fushigi Yuugi" means. So have I…well, now I know! Fushigi Yuugi is Japanese for "Mysterious Play". (Fushigi="mysterious"; Yuugi="play")
Another vocabulary quickie: The word "miko", as in Suzaku and Seriyuu no Miko, is Japanese for "sorceress" or "priestess".
Tamahome, Hotohori, Tasuki, and Chichiri formed a Japanese rock band called "THTC", which is a real album backed by the voice actors of the four FY studs. It's incredibly funny. You have to listen to their theme song, in which Tasuki mouths off and pretends to be the leader (he has those qualities, no?).
Music is definitely an important factor in Fushigi Yuugi. My favorite tunes are the ending themes to both the original FY TV series, and the OAV series. Upbeat tunes are the way to go! The name of the TV series opening is called "Itooshi Hito No Tameni". What it means…who knows?
Miaka is voiced by Kae Araki, who plays her speaking and singing role. Believe it or not, most of the voice actors and actresses on FY are actually excellent professional singers -- the FY Vocal Collection CD showcases their awesome singing talents! Also, there are lots of other FY CD's out there, with lots of cool tracks heard from the entire series (the OAV 2 soundtrack is the best)!
Tasuki and Tamahome are, at first, partial enemies. As the series continues, their spitefulness turns into friendship, as their bitter battles become more like brotherly spats. The same goes for Miaka and Nuriko, who start out as kitties, but then their friendship grows stronger.
Tetsuya and Yui are not brother and sister, as some people may think on first impression, but they do share a strong relationship which kindles near the end of the FY OVAs (in other words, they start dating!).
Yuuki Miaka, Suzaku no Miko, was actually born in 1977 -- that makes her around 25 now, while Tamahome is 27 or so (their ages are 2 years apart).
Miaka fact: Although this lovely girl can eat up a storm…she can't cook a lick of grub! No matter what she attempts to cook for company, it always ends up burnt…and her company (mostly her brother Keisuke) gets knocked out for bad-mouthing her cooking. And Tamahome wants to stay with a girl that can't cook? Give this girl some culinary lessons as an anniversary gift, ok?
Tamahome fact: Next to Tasuki, Miaka, and Nuriko, Tamahome has some of the best super-deformeds ever! One of my favorites is when he goes from a straight face to a silly and hilarious face in which he sticks out his tongue (in front of Nakago). Another one is when he finds a bag full of Miaka's favorite treats -- his eyes get so big and watery, it's hard not to laugh! Another teary-eyed moment happens during the Fushigi Yuugi OAV Tour Bus mini-episodes, in which Tamahome learns that the show he's on -- Fushigi Yuugi -- has sold millions of copies worldwide, and as he finds out the profits, his eyes turn into the size of his fists, and are as teary as ever! There are tons of gut-tickling SD's of Tamahome to look out for!
Speaking of the Tour bus episodes, here's a small synopsis of what happens to all the FY characters in this 3-part mini-series:
Nuriko sings karaoke songs.
Chichiri and Tasuki have to answer to an angry Mitsukake during a card game.
Chiriko gets nauseous (and shows her "lunch bag", if you catch my drift).
Miaka and Tamahome seclude themselves and act romantic (which probably made Chiriko sick).
Keisuke drives the Suzaku bus and has to put up with all the crap going on in the Suzaku bus.
Tetsuya drives the Seriyuu bus and has to put up with all the crap going on there.
The two buses end up at a hot springs hotel.
Nakago blows up the Suzaku bus.
The FY group celebrates its sales…Tamahome looks at the profits and turns extremely happy.
The FY group finds out that only women are allowed to enter the hot springs hotel, causing the male cast members to dress up like women (Tasuki and Tamahome, as manly as they are, hate their new look…Miaka thinks of it as hilarious.)
Chiriko and Chichiri turn out to be the best looking guys-turned-gals…while Mitsukake turns out to be the worst guy-turned-gal (It's so bad, they digitized his face on-screen).
At the end, Keisuke says that "big brother has found his calling", after he sees the women that worked at the hot springs hotel, causing him and the other male cast members to dress back in their normal clothing, and to enjoy themselves.
The three-part mini-episode series ends, and the cast leaves the studio where they worked.
In the FY mangas, the hair colors of our characters may be slightly different. For example, Chichiri's hair is blue in the series, while his hair is orange-ish in the manga. Also: Miaka is a brunette in the series, while she dons a head of black hair in the manga. I guess that's mangas for you!
Speaking of hairdos, do you like Miaka's and Yui's hair down…or up? Notice that throughout the series, the mikos' hair lengths grow quite considerably.
It's fashions-a-go-go on Fushigi Yuugi! Every character on FY has a great sense of fashionable taste, right down to the Suzaku/Seriyuu members, as well as Miaka, Yui, Keisuke, Tetsuya, and basically everyone! In some images you can find online in various webmaster galleries, you will see our fave characters dressing up in American clothing! Have you ever seen Tasuki in jeans and a letterman jacket, or the honorable Hotohori in a business suit? In the Four Gods, Sky and Earth book, the character's don't have clothing like that, mainly because it was a whole 'nother dimension! But when they get into Miaka's world, it's all good -- fashion-wise. In one episode of the series, Tamahome is helped out by Keisuke, and he dresses him up in an excellent-looking black suit that drives Miaka to a status of ultra-deformed craziness (in other words, she loved it! She loved it!)!
Tasuki's verbs will often end in an apostrophe without the final letter "g" -- like rushin', killin', sleepin', eatin', movin', and numerous others. Just like most anime "tough guys", Tasuki has an Kansai accent (Kansai is a region in Japan).
A "hammer" is a term applied to individuals who drown in water due to the fact that they can't swim; a hammer (tool) sinks when it is dropped into a pool of water. Logical? Yes it is! And Tasuki's one of them (he is constantly made fun of by Tamahome because of that fact).
Speaking of Tasuki (yet again), my favorite scene in the FY OAVs is when Tasuki and Nuriko are talking, and Nuriko holds up a sign that reads the English word "delicacy". Nuriko asks Tasuki what's on the sign, and Tasuki says, "Delicacy". The next thing that happens is that Tasuki gets knocked out by Nuriko (because Tasuki-chan had no "delicacy" for the time that Tamahome was weakened)! It's definitely the funniest scene ever for a couple reasons: One, Tasuki can be just plain ignorant at times; and two, an English word is seen in an ancient Chinese world (where no English exists)!
(Yet) Another Tasuki fact: One of his corniest lines in the series was: "Miaka…I'm a man, too." Yeah, we know Tasuki's 100% man, but what about those dangling earrings and the shiny necklaces? Explain that, buddy! Seriously, though, a lot of female otakus are in love with Tasuki's impeccable fashion sense. Ask anyone, and they will tell you that he looks good in anything!
(Can you believe it? Yet ANOTHER) Tasuki fact: If you ever make Tasuki angry, he will be sure to put you on his "Sh** List". Pardon the vulgarity, but Tasuki has a special little list of people that really get his tessen lit up. So, just be nice to him, and you won't have to worry about a thing!
Nuriko (voiced by Chika Sakamoto, who also sings professionally) is probably one of the best cross-dressers I've ever seen in anime. What's his reason for the change of wardrobe? It has to do with a family secret, which I will not reveal, which would make the secret worthless, right? Well, anyhoo, I can gladly say Nuriko enjoys women's clothing, so to each his (or even her) own!
Here's a tip: Sex raises chi. Don't forget that! Just don't do or try anything, okay?

SYNOPSIS:
Two schoolgirl friends accidentally get sucked into another world -- a 2-dimensional world in a mystical book, in which they wish to escape from. Within the story in the book, the girls become "royalty" and are destined to find seven magical individuals to call upon their animal gods to make 3 wishes, which could then lead them out of the book world, and back into their own world. But before that happens, the girls meet with new friends, and are constantly surrounded by love, deceit, tragedy, and big adventure.
This series proves that you can be serious and funny simultaneously! This is Fushigi Yuugi, the awesome anime tale about a schoolgirl who gets trapped inside a 2-dimensional world, meeting new friends and making enemies along the way. The heavenly leaders are called "no mikos", in which seven spirited people with powerful characters on a specific body part come forth together to call upon their distinctive animal gods, who can make serious wishes come true.
The story revolves around Miaka Yuuki, a bubbly, naive, yet sweet 15 year-old schoolgirl, who is about to take her high school exams (that is, if her bottomless pit for a stomach doesn't get in the way!), until she and her best friend Yui Hongo (also 15) stumble upon a magical book found in a restricted reading room area (Important Documents Reference Room) in their local national library. The book is titled "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho"; in English it means: Four Gods, Sky and Earth, and as she opens the book…something magical happens. Miaka and Yui get "sucked" into the book and then they enter an imaginary world, which resembles ancient China. Miaka's brother Keisuke, and his friend Tetsuya are along on the reading ride on earth in the library, constantly looking for clues and getting help to keep track of Miaka and her written, magical travels.
As the story rolls along (to make this incredibly long series short), both Miaka and Yui are turned into "mikos" -- that is, they both have the privilege of searching for their respective seven Seishi ("holy warriors"); once all seven of their Seishi are assembled (and the FGS&E is present), a ceremony can be commenced to call upon their special magical animal god, and as I've said before, wishes can come true -- 3 to be exact. Each Seishi has a special character imprinted on a part of their body, and the respective characters symbolize an element of superhuman strength. Miaka is turned into Suzaku no Miko (animal god: The phoenix), and Yui becomes Seiryuu no Miko (animal god: The dragon). This simply is one of the best anime series ever, and you have to see it to believe it (but take my word for it for now, k?).
Now for our characters:
First, there's Miaka, a.k.a Suzaku no Miko, who's young, pretty, and sometimes a total klutz! But she has a great heart and it's in the right place. She is trusting, affectionate, kind, emotional, 24-7 cheerful, and loves all her friends to death. However, never invite this girl to dinner, because she will eat anything and everything in sight (yes, she's an extremely hungry, food-loving girl with uncanny metabolism!) ! Despite her love for food, she also has another deep love -- for our next character…
…his name is Tamahome, a sly, handsome, strong, 17 year-old guy, who's Miaka's true and definite love. Besides Miaka, Toma's main love is…money!! But he's no greedy boy…well, not always. He has a strong heart and a great mind, and his agility and strength (both mental and physical) are incredible. His family is very cool, too (he has a father, two little brothers and two little sisters). Tamahome is the 1st of the seven Suzaku Seishi, and it was love at first sight for him and Miaka-sama when she entered the magical book land. Tamahome is never afraid to fight for the ones he loves, is extremely cunning, and has a great sense of humor. He is the first person that Miaka meets, and when they did…BOOM -- fireworks! Tamahome has the symbol of the "ogre" on his forehead, which gives him incredibly great strength, endurance, and power.
The next Suzaku Seishi is…well, you tell me, once you see the series. Is our next character a man or a woman (or elements of both)? His (it's a he, believe it or not!) name is Nuriko, who at first, cross-dresses as a woman, and then later in the series, we find out that he's actually a he! Nuriko does one heck of a deception job! Anyhoo, (s)he holds the power of extreme strength (and how!), and is a sweet, lovely, caring, yet dizzy character, who loves to sing, and has a drink named after him called the "Nuriko Special" -- try it, you'll like it!
Next, we meet #3, Chichiri (a.k.a. "fox-eyes"), who you shouldn't take for granted because of his wacky, yet cool blue hairstyle! He is one magical dude, best known for saying "no no da" or "no da" at the end of most of his sentences (just to let you know, "no da" and "no no da" are Japanese, and are the equivalents of "you know?" or "you know what I mean?" in English). Chichiri is always happy, yet it's only a mask he's wearing, believe it or not! The whole happy mask concept came from a mistake that happened in his life (over his best friend and fiancee), and he wears the mask as a significance to "covering up his past in life". Yet, Chichiri is warm, kind, and always around for a word of wisdom. Chichiri has the power of magic and he can teleport, transform, capsize, disappear, oh, my, the list goes on!
Now we come to the royal side of the FY bunch. Our next Seishi is Hotohori (that's Emperor Hotohori to you!), who rules his land of Konan Country with love and peace. He's decisive, patient, and very loving. His only problem…he's one extremely vain guy! He's not conceited, but you may think he is (on some occasions; nothing permanent). He is the 4th Suzaku Seishi that we meet, and he's one of the good ones! For a short period between episodes, Chichiri transformed himself into Hotohori and took his place while the real Emperor was out saving Miaka's life.
Next we come to my fave character, the fifth of seven. His name is Tasuki (pronounced "tah-ski"), who is one of the most funniest characters…especially when he's drunk! You may call him Tasuki, or by his nickname "Genrou", or by some other names, like "Hothead", or "Hammer", "Fangboy", or "Angryface". Call him any one of these names, and he will be sure to burn the heck out of you!! Seriously, Tasuki is a temperamental, impatient, foul and smart-mouthed bandit warrior. But we love him, right? Of course we do! Tasuki is very strong, unyielding, and he fights to the finish for his friends. Believe it or not, this guy knows what true friendship means, because he's no infidel, and he has a great sense of humor, especially when the chips are down for our heroes. He's given the power of fire, which comes forth from his "tessen", which is a large Japanese fan. If you have a tessen at home and it doesn't emit fire, too bad! Tasuki only has this power. By screaming out "LEKKA SHIEN" or "REKKA SHINEN", flames brighter than his red hair are comin' at ya! This guy is probably one of the funniest characters, probably because of his super-deformed faces (when an anime character's anatomical appearance is exaggerated in a big way) his mouth gets himself in trouble more than his antics! But as the story continues, you'll see his soft, sensitive side (wow, he has one??). Tasuki is one of the best-created (and partially cerebral) characters in the history of anime, and I think this guy is awesome!
Our next character, the sixth Suzaku Seishi is the bold, quiet, and sensitive Mitsukake (pronounced "mits-ka-kay"), who has the power of life and healing. He can sense pain and heal it up in an instant with a wave of his hand! His hang-out pet is Tama, a white cat, who can be frisky and just as funny as our other FY characters. In one episode, Tama dresses up and pretends to be Miaka (to make Tamahome feel better..or worse?). In another episode, he plays charades and acts as three characters at once! Also, the kitty is also is bewitched by Miaka in another episode, but to find out what happened, you'll have to watch the series!
Our seventh and last Suzaku Seishi is Chiriko (no, he's no Armored Trooper!). Chiriko is a bright, understanding, super-book-smart and friendly genius, whose peaceful tones played on a leaf flute can calm the rowdiest crowd. Chiriko is the youngest of the seven (13 yrs. old), and is just as powerful as the rest. His symbol is found on his left foot. And there you have it, the seven Suzaku Seishis!
Now for our other characters, on the opposite side of good.
First up is Hongo Yui, also known as Seiryuu no Miko. Yui is a lovely, strong, studious blonde, but her mind is taken over by trickery by the baddies in the FGS&E book. She once was Miaka's best friend (since their freaking childhood!), but now, as the pages turn, and the story goes on, Yui believes that Miaka's more concerned with Tamahome than her, and that made her angry and envious, by golly! But as the story unfolds, the truth comes out, and her heart, as all others, will see the light.
The leader of the Seiryuu Seishis is the evil, diabolical Nakago. Just because he has blond hair and blue eyes doesn't mean he's the average nice guy! His cold past has turned him into an extremely powerful and destructive Seishi, determined to stop Miaka and her friends from calling upon Suzaku. He'll do anything -- cheat, lie, steal, have se--ooops, I think I've said too much! But you've got the picture. Nakago will stop at nothing until he (and Yui) are satisfied.
Now for the other Seiryuu Seishi: first, there's Ashitare, who is a large, bulging, killing machine, with the agility of a wolverine (and the hairstyle of Tina Turner!). Next we meet Soi, the only female Seishi, who has strong, alluring powers. She can sword fight and whip anybody, so don't mess with her! We now meet Tomo, the evil, deep-voiced, wizard-like man, whose magic and trickery almost stopped our heroes in their tracks (but his well-painted face can do that just nicely!). He is capable of creating incredibly believable, yet deadly illusions, which our characters give in to often. Our next Seishi is Miboshi, a bald, floating, Buddha-like character, but his wisdom is downright deadly! He also has brainy-magical powers, and can overpower anything in his sight. Finally, our last two Seiryuu Seishis are of the brotherly type. Their names are Amiboshi and Suboshi. The first 'boshi, Amiboshi, actually perpetrated to be a Suzaku Seishi (which one? I'll never tell!), but later on, the trick didn't work. The latter 'boshi, Suboshi, is Amiboshi's bro, and the two are very, very close to each other…and not to mention close to their no Miko, the lovely Yui-sama!
Another important character is the wise Taiitsu-kun, whose impeccable advice and instruction helps our team out in the stickiest situations (even if it hurts them sometimes). Her cute, helpful, yet sometimes annoying helpers called Niang-niangs are her servants, healers, nurses, cleaners, and everything in between (how much are these kids getting paid?). Just one word of caution: Always remember the phrase "Be kind to your elders". Don't be like Tamahome and call her an "old hag", unless you are a glutton for punishment!
These are the characters and plot for an extremely awesome anime adventure. I have to send my acknowledgments to the writers and animators of this series -- every episode is a cliffhanger, and the facial expressions, humor, characters, plot line and comedy are incredible! Domo arrigato to the FY team!
Believe me, you have to watch this series; it is a serious must-have. And you have to watch the nine-episode OAV's (OAV=Original Animated Video ). It's the continuing and final story of the FY bunch, and in between, you'll see the hilarious Fushigi Mischief, which are your basic bloopers from the FY team. These bloopers are soooo funny, even Dick Clark and Ed McMahon would be proud to host them…really!
So check this series out…and remember…with the power of love, nothing's impossible! Fushigi Yuugi rocks the anime world! Fly high Suzaku miracle Lah!
